A Place to Feel Normal Again

Touring The Matanuska Glacier During Covid-19

For those of us who live and work out by the Matanuska Glacier, life doesn’t seem too much different since COVID-19 sent us all into lockdown. We already live sixty miles from Palmer (the nearest town with a grocery store), and on any given day we may only see a few people; those few people are community members who we know well.

I took a wonderful family on tour a few days ago, and the smiles on their faces as we trekked down the muddy hill towards the terminus was a sight to behold. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a happier group of people in my life. At one point, the mom looked at me with wide eyes and said, “This is the first time I’ve felt normal in months!” I began to laugh and then scanned the rest of the group to see the expressions on their faces– all smiles, wide eyes, and looks of absolute joy.
